He lived at Sudbury, Suffolk.

The 1841 Census shows him as the Innkeeper of the Rose & Crown Inn, King Street, Sudbury, Suffolk, and also as a Veterinary Surgeon. His wife Sarah (aged 35) was born in the same County. Also at home were William (aged 13), Charles (aged 10), Edward (aged 8), Ellen (aged 6), Ann (aged 1-and-a-half), and Emily (aged 5 months).

The 1851 Census shows him at Brundon Hall, a Farmer of 500 acres employing 26 labourers. It also shows he was born at Monks Eleigh. Sarah was not present. Also at the same residence were Ellen Jane (aged 16) and Emily (aged 10, Scholar at Home).

The UK National Archives has a Trade Card: Print. Trade card - William Baker, Commercial Inn and Posting House, Sudbury - Times coaches leave the Rose and Crown on reverse. Item 1511/234/30 undated

Vincent Brice Carew Baker, in his family notes, mentions he has a cup presented by "The Officers of the L.M. troop of Yeomanry Cavalry, won 30.9.1834 by his mare Dotty at Long Melford".

Brundon Hall

It is likely that William Baker bought Brundon Hall after 1841. He hosted local cricket matches, as reported in the Bury and Norwich Post ^[1] several times:

September 2nd 1845: A match of cricket was played on a meadow by permission of William Baker of Brundon Hall between Sudbury and Earls Colne. Earls Colne won by 5 wickets

October 8th 1851 : On Tuesday, Brundon Cricket Club played a game amongst themselves on the ground kindly lent them by Mr W.Baker of Brundon Hall. Some good cricket was played and afterwards they adjourned to the Christopher Inn in Sudbury and spent a pleasant evening.

Also reported in the 1848 Sudbury Post^[2]:
March 9th 1848: 45 fowls were stolen from a fowl house at Brundon Hall belonging to Mr W. Baker, an active search is going on for the offenders who we hope will soon be in custody.

In the 1855 Bury and Norwich Post:^[3]:
September 5th 1855: Sale of live and dead stock at Brundon Hall, Sudbury, the property of the late William Baker. 14 horses-14 handsome dairy cows-Suffolk bull-135 sheep-109 head of swine and implements for 500 acres.
